The main objective of the project is to design a smart dustbin which will help in keeping our environment clean and also eco friendly. We are inspired from “Swachh Bharat Mission”. Nowadays technologies are getting smarter day-by-day so, as to clean the environment we are designing a smart dustbin by using Arduino. This smart dustbin management system is built on the microcontroller based system having ultrasonic sensors on the dustbin. If dustbin is not maintained than these can cause an unhealthy environment and can cause pollute that affect our health. In this proposed technology we have designed a smart dustbin using ARDUINO UNO, along with an ultrasonic sensor, servo motor, and battery jumper wire. 

The main concept behind the Smart Dustbin using Arduino project is Object Detection. I have already used an Ultrasonic Sensor in many projects. A similar methodology is implemented here, where the Ultrasonic Sensor is placed on top and side of the dustbin’s lid and when the sensor detects any object like a human hand, it will trigger the Arduino to open the lid. 

We are using an ultrasonic sensor that transmits the ultrasonic waves and receives the waves when they come back by hitting any object. So when the person detects in front of the dustbin it sends some signal to the Arduino which we are using as a Controller in this project. so now the Arduino gets the data and analyses the data for further processing so that the dustbin can operate well. now, understand how the Arduino analyses the data. the ultrasonic sensor sends the received signal to the Arduino and the Arduino calculates the distance by the duration of sound waves coming back. 

Now, according to the distance, we make some conditions in the code. like if the distance between the person and the dustbin is less than 15 centimeters then the Arduino will send a command to the servo motor to rotate 90 degrees from its initial position which causes the lid to open and after the interval of 10 seconds, the lid will automatically close.

Applications and Advantages 

1. A reduction in the number of waste collections needed by up to 80%, resulting in less manpower, emissions, fuel use and traffic congestion. 
2. A reduction in the number of waste bins needed. 
3. Maintain environmental hygiene (i.e. no overflowing of waste and less unpleasant odor ). 
4. It will help in bringing evolution by technology in term of cleanliness.
